Taking a screenshot of an Instagram photo is the lazy option — and it shows. Screenshots are lower resolution, often cropped, and include UI elements. Here's how to save Instagram photos in their original full resolution without ever taking a screenshot.
Why Screenshots Are a Bad Idea
- Screenshots are limited to your screen resolution, not the original image resolution
- They often include the Instagram UI (buttons, username, etc.)
- They're cropped to your screen size, cutting off parts of tall images
- JPEG compression from screenshots degrades quality further
- On some devices, Instagram may notify the poster when you screenshot Stories
The Right Way: Download the Original File
- 1Open the Instagram post you want to save.
- 2Tap the three-dot menu and select 'Copy Link'.
- 3Open sktoolkit.com and paste the link.
- 4Click 'Capture & Download'.
- 5The full-resolution image appears — tap download to save it to your device.
Tip: The downloaded file is the original JPEG as uploaded by the creator — no UI overlay, no cropping, full resolution.
What Resolution Will I Get?
Instagram stores images at up to 1080px wide for feed posts and up to 1440px for some formats. SKToolkit always fetches the highest resolution version available — significantly better than any screenshot.
Does This Work for Instagram Stories?
Instagram Stories that have been shared via a public link can be downloaded. However, Stories from private accounts or Stories that have expired (after 24 hours) cannot be accessed.
Can I Download Multiple Photos at Once?
Yes. For carousel posts (multiple photos in one post), SKToolkit shows all images and lets you download them individually or as a ZIP file. This is far faster than screenshotting each one.
